At ProEd Global School, we believe that every child has the potential to succeed and exceed expectations when given the right support. This is why we are proud to offer a highly-targeted educational framework for primary and secondary students with special needs and multiple learning differences.
The Towards Independence program is our specialised curriculum designed to help children develop life skills and complete accredited courses at a pace that suits their specific needs. It is exciting and interactive, with a multi-sensory approach to learning and regular community trips to practise communication skills.
Our Classrooms
We understand that every child learns differently, which is why we have created flexible seating arrangements in our classrooms. This allows students to move around, sit where they feel most comfortable, and engage with their peers and the learning materials in a way that suits them best. Moreover, our high teacher-student ratio and small-sized classes ensure that individual attention is given whenever necessary.
Our Curriculum
Students accessing the Towards Independence Program receive an Individual Education Plan (IEP) with academic, social, functional and specialist goals that are set at the start of the school year and reviewed and updated on a termly basis. This ensures that each student’s education is individualised to meet their specific needs, helping them to progress towards independence.
The curriculum encourages learners to reach their full potential through one-on-one support and undertake contemporary ASDAN academic subjects as well as ASDAN life skills programs. In Primary, students follow the academic and social curriculum in the New Horizons program and the Towards Independence Starting Out program. In High School, they continue with Towards Independence modules and are able to choose short courses to complete, complemented with practical activities and teacher support in the community.
TI1 and TI2 (Primary)
Towards Independence 1 and 2 classes are for primary students aged 4 to 12 with special needs or multiple learning differences. They follow both the British and ASDAN curricula as an alternative study pathway that allows students to develop important educational and life skills in a safe and supportive environment.
Our classrooms have a maximum of 6 students and are staffed with 2 to 4 teachers at any given time to address the individual learning needs of each child. We offer additional work when students excel in class and modify work for students who may be struggling, so every student can achieve to the best of their ability.
Students in the Towards Independence program also get to work together with mainstream ProEd Global School primary school students for Sport and Fitness classes, allowing them to engage in larger group activities and promote whole-child development. They also spend time in the playground, attend school events and assembly, which help to build important peer relationships and develop communication skills with their same-age peers.
T13 and T14 (Secondary)
Towards Independence 3 and 4 is a program designed for students between the ages of 12 and 19 with a key focus on developing independence skills. Our small classroom sizes, with a 2:5 teacher to student ratio, allow for individual attention and support. Some of the classes are co-taught with the Speech and Language Therapists to implement communication strategies and target language development in the classroom.
Students attend age-appropriate mainstream classes for Sport & Fitness and Art classes, while still receiving tailored, one-on-one support for Literacy, Numeracy and Communication. This allows for whole-child development and a sense of inclusivity. Students also have opportunities to build relationships and communication skills with their peers through shared time in the playground, at assemblies, and other school activities.
Our program emphasises practical skills and work experience to prepare our students for life beyond the classroom. Older students have the opportunity to attend vocational training twice a week at Finn’s Recreation Club, where they can gain experience in areas like barista training, kitchen training, and child care. Our SENCO and Speech Therapist support them to ensure successful workplace communication and knowledge. Additionally, students can choose from a range of electives from ASDAN to further develop their skills.
Our goal is to equip our students with the essential life and communication skills needed to succeed in their daily lives. We do so by focusing on honing the following abilities:
Financial literacy – Your child will learn how to manage their money and make sound financial decisions.
Time management – Your child will understand how to prioritise and manage their time effectively.
Self-reliance – Your child will learn how to take care of themselves and make decisions on their own.
Communication – Your child will develop their ability to communicate in class and in the community.
Independent living – Your child will learn how to live and navigate the community with confidence.
Catering – Your child will have the opportunity to learn valuable catering skills.
Physical fitness – Your child will participate in sports and physical activities to promote their overall well-being.
We also provide Towards Independence students with Speech and Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy and counselling throughout the school day in both classroom and one-on-one settings as needed. Our aim is to foster a well-rounded education that not only supports academic development but also priorities the overall wellbeing of our students.
